Why did a clean defensive win ever make your next Arc Raiders raid feel harsher? That's the real question behind Live Update 1.39.0. The update doesn't make Topside safer; it tries to stop the matchmaking model from reading every successful response as aggression, while fixing grenade reliability, map snags, project screens, and the small frustrations that can ruin a run built around ARC Raiders Items you genuinely didn't want to lose.

The Update Is About Intent, Not Kill Counts

The biggest change is the defensive PvP test. When another squad damages, downs, or knocks out one of your teammates first, your whole squad is treated as defending. Return fire-even if you wipe the attackers-should not push your playstyle estimate toward frequent initiators. That distinction matters because Arc Raiders has always been more interesting than a pure DPS contest. A cautious solo, a loot-focused duo, and a trio hunting ARC can all make sensible choices that end in a firefight. From what I've seen, the previous concern was never that combat existed; it was that surviving combat could make future lobbies feel like constant pressure.

What I'd Do Differently During First Contact

The test still gives weight to who begins a serious fight, and joining a fight already happening counts as initiating. So don't treat every distant gunshot as free third-party loot. Read the situation first. A fast push might secure a clutch score, but it can also turn a raid that had nothing to do with you into a long, expensive mess. My practical rule is simple.

1. Hold cover and identify how many squads are involved before firing.
2. Keep an exit route instead of stacking every teammate on one angle.
3. Commit only when the reward, objective, or survival benefit is clear.

Solo, Duo, and Trio Aren't the Same Game

Separate playstyle tracking for solo, duo, and trio raids is easy to overlook, yet it may be the smarter foundation beneath 1.39.0. Solo Arc Raiders play rewards restraint because one bad peek ends the entire plan. In a trio, revives, crossfire, and shared information make a proactive push more reasonable. Treating those two moods as one permanent profile would be nonsense. The table below is not a stat sheet; it's the useful way to think about why your loadout and behavior should change with squad size.

Raid format.
Typical priority.
Useful mindset.
Solo.
Information and extraction.
Avoid fights with no payoff.
Duo.
Cover and recovery.
Trade angles, not lives.
Trio.
Coordination and pressure.
Call targets before committing.
The Quiet Fixes Matter More Than They Sound

Seeker Grenade and Wolfpack Grenade damage behaving consistently is not filler-patch material. Explosives shape spacing, pushes, retreats, and how much confidence you can put into a planned burst window. Dam Battlegrounds and Buried City also received collision, terrain, invisible-obstacle, and stuck-location repairs. A Snap Hook route that carried players outside the intended play area was closed as well. Arc Raiders is built on tense movement through hostile spaces, so losing a raid to bad geometry feels far worse than losing a fair gunfight. And the remaining issues-crashes, throwable animation trouble, odd weapon swaps, and shots from ARC rides failing to register-are still worth keeping in mind before risking your best build.

Projects, Loot Value, and the Between-Raid Grind

The revised Projects area has clearer objective text, better reward presentation, completed-stage review, and more consistent timer displays. That sounds mundane until you're trying to plan what to bring back instead of stuffing your pack with random loot. Project access now opens after five completed rounds, which gives newer players a clearer early target. For players comparing routes, prices, and progression needs, cheap ARC Raiders Coins can be part of the wider preparation conversation, but the real habit is checking project steps before deployment. Don't extract with a full inventory that advances nothing when one specific component would have finished a stage.

Arc Raiders Isn't Fading-It's Being Refined

Update 1.39.0 doesn't answer every complaint, and I could be wrong but the first-contact rules will need continued tuning around accidental hits and chaotic multi-squad fights. Still, the direction makes sense. Arc Raiders works best when a distant player is a question, not an automatic target and not a guaranteed ally. This patch protects that uncertainty by separating chosen aggression from self-preservation, while also repairing the systems that make each extraction feel earned. Bring a loadout you can afford to lose, communicate before firing, and judge the update by how your next several raids feel-not by one ugly spawn.
